Do you have a broken down on vehicle sitting in a shed or garage, or out in the weather somewhere on your property? Have you got a car sitting around which needs repairs that you will never be able to get around to? Have you gotten yourself a new car but not taken care of the one you had before? It’s time to get rid of those vehicles left lying around which aren’t serving any purpose and which can’t be put to use.
We spend a lot of time in our cars. And a lot of us have happy memories associated with each car that we own. There always comes a time to get rid of any car. When it’s broken down, can’t be used and is just in the way, you will know it’s the right time to get rid of the car.
If you haven’t sold a car before, especially one that isn’t even running, it can be hard to know where to begin. But you can trust Sell My Car to help you every step of the way. In this blog we’ll talk you through some our top tips for preparing to sell an old car.
1. Clear out the car
It doesn’t matter to us if the car is filled with rubbish, equipment, products or car seats. But, if you’re going to get rid of the car, you should take one final look through it to see there isn’t anything left in there you want to keep. It’s worth checking the boot, inside glove box and under the seats for any long lost treasures that might have left behind. From old love letters to university textbooks, from well used CDs to cameras, battery packs and phones- more stuff gets left behind than you might imagine.
2. Find the paperwork
It’s not compulsory for you to find or provide us with any paperwork about the car, such as log books, accident records or registration slips. However, because we’ll be asking you the make and the model, it can make it easier for us to give you an accurate quote quickly if you have all the details on hand. Check the car itself, or a filing cabinet for documents related to the car.
3. Cancel any insurance
If the car hasn’t been used in a while, you might not have any insurance on it. But, if it has been on the road recently, and is still insured, you need to let your insurer know that the car will be disposed of.
4. Contact us for an offer
When you ring, we’ll talk to you about your car and ask you for as much information that you can provide. We will need to know the make and model, and the year of manufacture is really helpful if you know it. We’ll ask about the history of the car, how long you’ve had it and possibly how many kilometers it has done. We’ll also ask that you tell us about any damage that the vehicle has incurred, plus any accidents and if there are any parts missing. We’ll use that information to make our offer.
5. Consider the offer
Our offers are given without obligation- it’s completely up to you as to whether you take us up on the offer. If you need some time to think about it, that’s fine. If you want to ring around and see if you can get a better offer, that’s fine.
6. Sell us your car
When you accept our offer, we’ll come and tow your car away and give you cash on the spot. We can meet you wherever the car is located, and are available outside of office hours.
7. Say goodbye to your car
Some customers seem genuinely sad to see their junk car be towed away. We’ve had customers who want to pose for one last photo with their car before the final goodbye. Other customers can’t wait to see the back of the broken down piece of junk that has been causing them problems. The last step is to wave goodbye as your car is towed into the distance.
